Abstract:
Background. This article describes a case study on the benefits of$\backslash$nsoftware reuse in a large telecom product. The reused components$\backslash$nwere developed in-house and shared in a product-family approach.$\backslash$nMethods. Quantitative data mined from company repositories are combined$\backslash$nwith other quantitative data and qualitative observations. Results.$\backslash$nWe observed significantly lower fault density and less modified code$\backslash$nbetween successive releases of the reused components. Reuse and standardization$\backslash$nof software architecture and processes allowed easier transfer of$\backslash$ndevelopment when organizational changes happened. Conclusions. The$\backslash$nstudy adds to the evidence of quality benefits of large-scale reuse$\backslash$nprograms and explores organizational motivations and outcomes. \textcopyright$\backslash$n2008 ACM.
